My paintings are medium driven. This work balances between the rich, ancient technique of encaustic and a contemporary, non-representative look. Beeswax paintings harden almost instantly and can last for thousands of years. Here, archival permanence and instant gratification converge.
I never need to wait for the paint to dry. Sometimes it hardens right on the brush before I have a chance to make my intended mark. I relish the random intention that comes from working fast with quick-cooling molten wax. Each brush stroke is calculated and premeditated but can transform completely during the happenstance of the fusing process.
200°F wax can be volatile. I prefer a propane torch to the industrial heat gun. When I set flame against my emerging painting I know that some colours will float up towards me while others sink past layers of pigment. Texture can be teased up or melted away in the blink of an eye. The speed at which my creations evolve during the fusing stage constantly ups the ante in my artistic process. This power of fire on wax draws me into trancelike hyperalertness.
My way of painting is reactively frenetic while my final pieces are serene, meditative works featuring rich texture and translucent, luminous layers.
